Google to Add map data correction capability?

Category: Google Places (Maps & Local) – Mike Blumenthal – 9:50 am

From: “Maps Guide Jen“  (Google-Maps-For-Business-Owners@googlegroups.com)
… it sounds like your addresses aren’t being recognized within our map data, all of which comes from NAVTEQ and TeleAtlas. We don’t currently have a way for you to submit your map data to Google Maps, although we’re working on it.

“Maps Guide Jen” the Google staffer at the Google-Maps-For-Business-Owners Group, provided the above answer when a business reporting that Google Maps was locating their business incorrectly. There is nothing more frustrating than when the underlying data to which a business owner has no access is wrong. It looks like Google will soon offer a solution that allows the business owner to correct that map data more easily themselves.

Please consider leaving a comment as your input will help me (& everyone else) better understand and learn about local.

  1. I wonder if this capability will be offered when they switch to the Endoxon data.

I had seen the reports of the acquisition but hadn’t given it much thought because they were speaking in terms of Europe.

It looks like 2007 is gearing up to be a fun year.

  3. my guess is that endoxon is more of a technology acquisition than a data provider. they do neat things with ajax layering on the maps and basically running on tele-atlas data which they back fill with other sources here and there. the poi and business infos are provided by yellowpages players like goyellow or local.ch etc. who partnered with endoxon as their maps provider… So they would be in the position to do it, technically speaking.

  4. Frank, thanks for stopping by.

I visited http://map.search.ch/ mentioned in the Google Operating System blog and I was impressed with both the imagery and the speed of a product that functions more like Google Earth than Google Maps does.

    Very neat indeed.

  6. [...] Mike over at Blumenthals has an interesting article about the Endoxon aquisition. Thanks for the update btw. Still it’s a little confusing to me. Guess their understanding of geotargeted search is different to what mine would be. [...]

  7. [...] -They have the group and providing support -They have a person in the group providing answers and taking the feedback (sometimes on the chin) -They are educating people and these folks are learning how to control their own record It seems that in the not too distant future Google will be allowing users to submit map corrections and perhaps the purchase of Endoxon will make that capability and more available to the users. However, as one of the writer’s in the blog pointed out: [...]
