Understanding Google My Business & Local Search
Upload Video to Google Maps Listings – New Google Local Feature
The ability post video to a business listing or place listing was mentioned last week and appears to be released. H/T to Phillip Barnhart, Director of Marketing at Nehmedia in Austin, for pointing it out.
For now the video can only be uploaded by Local Guides using Android Maps but the videos will be visible from search everywhere. A 10 second video can be captured with the Android Google Maps app or a 30 second video can be uploaded.
Apparently the feature is rolling out gradually so you might or might not see it right away.
From the announcement:
If you’re a Local Guide on Android, you can get started right now.
How to create a video when you’re at a place:
- Search and select a place on Google Maps
- Scroll down and tap “Add a photo”
- Tap “Camera” and hold the shutter button for up to 10 seconds
How to upload a video you’ve already shot:
- Search and select a place on Google Maps
- Scroll down and tap “Add a photo”
- Tap “Folder” and select a video. Only the first 30 seconds of a video can be added.

Wow. I’m really excited to see this released on every platform!
Does that mean you can upload of a 30 second video of yourself complaining?
@Thibault
I presume so. Are you going to give it a try?
Can this be added by owners of the page listing through their admin view – or is this only for customers/visitors?
Awesome summary! Thank you!
Very interesting. I wonder if the business owner can submit a 30-second video, and if potential customers and new visitors know if that content is from the business owner.
@Morgan
Currently the only view of this is via Android Google Maps and there is no “admin view” in the GMB dashboard. I assume if this takes off that at some point, Google will add to the back end.
@Justin
Currently only Local Guides can contribute a video and it would show up in their personal name.
I assume that if a business owner was a local guide, they could post a video and it would show up under their Local Guide individual name.
Is there any way to see your videos once they have been uploaded? I can’t quite seem to figure it out. I also look forward to a future blog article about suggested standards to properly implementing and optimizing the videos. One standard that I think is ridiculous is they suggest to record the videos in Vertical format vs Horizontal format (https://www.localguidesconnect.com/t5/General-Discussion/How-to-post-great-videos-on-Google-Maps/m-p/429009).
The Google moves over the past couple of months have been rather dazzling.
And, hey, are people really pouring melted butter on french fries?
@Miriam
Seem to finally be going a mile a minute…. they are just slow starters. 🙂
I guess that they are pouring butter on french fries… disgusting eh? Although in this nexk of the wood their either dip them in mayonnaise or pour gravy over them.. equally disgusting.
My gosh … mayonnaise?
Oh interesting. I didn’t realize they made this available. I’m going to see if I can upload one of my client’s videos to their GMB listing.
Do you know if i can upload this type of videos to the GMB? http://www.edman.tv
I produce social media videos. thanks.
@Ed
As long as it is less than 30 seconds it is worth a try to upload explainer videos. No clear rules yet.
Have we seen any effect on SEO rankings for this? Also, I can see the trend as Google already displays images analytics and they might add video analytics soon too.
Are there separate Local Guides for Android and IOS or do you mean I should go get myself an Android phone?
I believe that at this point it is Android only however the feature will at some point become available to both iPhone users and from within the GMB.
I saw the post that you can now add video as an owner of the Google My Business page. I have uploaded some that way and 3 days later still not showing. Do you know of any that have completed the process and have them public yet? Not sure if it the process or is it is specs on the video? I did have text on some opening screens.
@Dave
Google My Business announced on their twitter stream that there is a bug in the GMB visor upload preventing them from showing. (https://twitter.com/googlemybiz/status/953709380851118080)
They noted:
We’re experiencing an issue with video uploads but the videos team is already aware and working on it. We’ll follow up here when the issue has been resolved. Thanks!
Thank you, I will have to follow them I have not watched that source of information. You do know everything GMB.
I checked this morning and both issues are fixed, the loading of videos error message does not stop uploads. This morning all four videos are visible on the front end of the Google My Business listing. Looks like they are ready for prime time and now I am very interested to see how it can affect the listing and its conversion to customers. Thanks for getting to follow the Facebook page and Twitter feed to help stay informed.
https://goo.gl/vXXbQV my first attempt.
Now I am trying to figure out how much I can optimize the video like branded Youtube thumbnails on the videos and trying to track the boost to the listing based on adding videos. What will do better landscape or portrait?
@Dave
Glad to see its working – Tried myself and all works
Good for business
Can I upload it from my iPhone 8?
