Understanding Google My Business & Local Search
iPhone users now see a mobile optimized blog
I recently looked back at my Google Analytics to get a sense of mobile traffic and saw the beginnings of mobile access. This chart, created to correspond with major iPhone rollouts, shows that iPhone usage, while still only .5% of my traffic, is on a healthy upswing.
While the iPhone could view my blog reasonably well, it seemed to make sense to optimize their experience. That is even more true for the Window’s Mobile users and other mobile devices attempting to visit. Frank Fuchsrecently suggested the MobilePress plugin as an easy way to deal with both.
It couldn’t have been easier to install and configure and it seems to work well. I viewed it from an friend’s iPhone and the default design was functional and fast if not pretty. It does allow for easy access and configuration of custom mobile themes as well.
If you have tried viewing this blog with either the iPhone or Windows Mobile, I would love to hear your feedback on MobilePress and your thoughts on providing a different interface to mobile users.

Hey Mike,
Looks great in my 3G iPhone.
Is there a setting to allow excerpts? My only lament on mobile optimized blogs is I’d like more than just the post title to make a decision about digging deeper.
Especially with today’s high-bandwidth smart phones there seems no need to worry about downloads. Even 80 – 100 characters would make my day 🙂

The plug in only allows on or off for iPhone. So as it currently configured I need to create/mod the template. Until I can have my staff look at would you prefer the summary or the full design?

Mike,
Obviously I’m a focus group of 1, but my sense is that iPhone users tolerate the pan and zoom. More than tolerate, revel in it — it allows everyone else to see how much cooler our phones are 🙂
I would say leave it on for Windows Mobile (my last phone was a Treo with windows and it was a pain on bigger pages) and off for iPhone.
Again, I’d love to hear more opinions before you make a big change, especially given I mostly read you on my desktop.
Cheers,
Will
Hey Will
A focused focus group of 1 is better than none. Since I don’t have an iPhone, I trust your input and will switch it to give the full view to iPhone users and the limited mobile view to other mobile users.
Mike
