Understanding Google My Business & Local Search
Minor Update to Guidelines RE Classes & Meeting Locations
Google has made a minor update to their guideline update disallowing a listing for an ongoing service, class, or meeting:
Last Week’s Update | This Week’s Update |
You also can’t create a Places listing for an ongoing service, class, or meeting at a location that you don’t own or have the authority to represent. Please coordinate with your host to have your information displayed on their Place page as a custom attribute or within their Description field. | You also can’t create a Places listing for an ongoing service, class, or meeting at a location that you don’t own or have the authority to represent. As I noted at the time of the update last week: Using the now hidden extra details as Google suggests would be useless and there is not enough space in the 200 character description. Not a helpful suggestion at all.
Now there is even less recommended choice. 200 Character space available to describe a business is barely adequate to describe a business. Asking either the location or the renter to split that space is not really a solution.

They need to revive the Beta logo. I wish I could make billions of dollars while flying by the seat of my pants.
Not to sound like some kind of commie, pinko, tree-hugger but I really believe there is a responsibility — much like a public utility — when you have so much power to determine what will, and will not be, a successful business model.
Well a commie would suggest that the Google’s gain came on the efforts of their workers and the largess of the government R&D & investment in critical infrastructure (think internet)… In that line of thought the argument could be made the it should not be just a public utility with strictly regulated margins but a publicly owned utility…. the workers and the public were entitled to the profits.
Instead the “public” is receiving 3% taxes on income and negotiating the return of other gains nearly tax free.
But that same commie would argue that Apple, MS, Exxon, Walmart, HP and all other corporations acrue the same benefits of their exploits and that the only fair solution would be to do away with all the corporations ie do away with capital and capitalism.
Careful… your line of thinking might take you places you don’t want to go…
I’ll sign the petition: let’s nationalize Google 😉
That all being said, it sure is still half baked …. 6 years in the oven and still not a fully formed being… and I thought elephants had long gestation periods.
Do you think the Additional Details will ever re-appear on our screens?
A most useful feature in our one entry per phone no AND business area, brave new world.
On a web phone an arrow button could toggle them up, I am sure users would twig quiet quickly.
@Andrew
Google continues to surprise me… (like bringing back the community edit feature)… I suppose anything is possible.
