Understanding Google My Business & Local Search
Google Testing Verification Whitelisting via API with Large Resellers & IYPs
Long asked for but not yet made public, a number of large Adwords resellers and IYPS seemingly now have the ability to auto-verify local listings via an API.
I have spoken with a number of European and North American resellers that claim to have the functionality. Although I have not yet seen it, its existence has been confirmed from multiple sources.
I do not know the processes involved, how Google vets the quality of the listings or if there are additional steps but the flow sounds expedited.
Obviously for anyone doing any amount of verification work, this would be a huge time saver.
And for spammers it could be a new vector. If you have details about how the product works, I would love to hear. Email me mike@blumenthals.com.
And apparently when I was not looking (traveling and speaking in Spain and California) Google has started offering up additional SMB verification options and an easier sign up flow.

Another one I’ve seen them testing recently is website verification if you have Search Console verified in the same account. Screenshot: http://share.hghr.se/niSZ
Are Premier Google Partners considered to be “large AdWords resellers”? Or is that a separate category entirely?
Waiting two weeks for a postcard to show up in the mail can be a pain but I’ll deal with it if it helps me avoid competing with phoney listings. I’d be interested in learning more about this as well
I guess it is really time to dive into the API. Google has been a lot better about customer service for getting listings verified. There are so many ways that verification can fail it would be great to just handle it with code.
Do you think that Google will ever try to charge for verification? Even $1 would generate a ton of revenue. Maybe they could just start with Locksmiths 🙂
Ha ha! If they did decide to charge, I would love to see them start with the overly spammy industries like Locksmiths!
We definitely need an alternative. I represent clients in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, teeming with quality small businesses but NO POSTAL SERVICE! They have skipped this archaic method of communication and use the internet, or tuktuk if the internet is down 🙂
