SEPT. 11 -> 13 STATE COLLEGE, PA AREA
GREENWOOD FURNACE FOLK GATHERING
It's time to register for the Greenwood Furnace Folk Gathering! Come
join us September 11-13 in central Pennsylvania for a fun and friendly
weekend of playing and listening to folk music - a fantastic three
days of workshops, concerts, jams, dancing and friendship. Activities
are held at Greenwood Furnace State Park in central PA, about 30 miles
from State College and 90 miles from Harrisburg. This is a gorgeous
location with beautiful mountain views, miles of hiking trails, and a
six acre lake for swimming and fishing.
Musicians of all instruments and levels are welcome, and there are
also options for singers, dancers, and non-musicians. There's a choice
of about 45 workshops on topics ranging from old time tunes to harmony
singing to arranging music. Jam sessions will take place throughout
the weekend. You'll have a chance to perform at open stage and also as
part of a group performance Saturday evening.
For those who are new to music, there will be dulcimers and autoharps
for you to rent for the weekend or borrow for a workshop, and we'll
have gentle and patient teachers to get you started. There will be a
staff concert each evening, followed by staff-led jams, singing around
the bonfire, and a contradance with open band.
The cost for the weekend is $65 if postmarked by August 1 and $80
afterwards.
The fee includes all workshops, jams, concerts, and dancing.
A meal package with 3 meals Saturday and 2 meals Sunday is available
for $45.
Camping is available by calling the park 8am-4pm at 814/667-1800. Let
them know you are part of the folk gathering, so that you may camp in
the area by the workshop activities. There are also hotels about 15
miles away.

OCT. 30 -> NOV. 1 FOLK WEEKEND Chautauqua Lake
ANNUAL FOLK WEEKEND
At Camp Onyahsa on Chautauqua Lake (http://www.onyahsa.org/)
5411 East Lake Road
Dewittville, NY 14728
October 30th-November 1st, 2009
Come back home to Chautauqua County for the Annual Folk Music Weekend.
The program this year will feature the following performers:
Alan Jabbour http;//www.alanjabbour.com
Alan Jabbour was born in 1942 in Jacksonville, Florida. A violinist
by early training, he put himself through college at the University of
Miami playing classical music. While a graduate student at Duke
University in the 1960s, he began documenting oldtime fiddlers in the
Upper South. Documentation turned to apprenticeship, and he relearned
the fiddle in the style of the Upper South from musicians like Henry
Reed of Glen Lyn, Virginia, and Tommy Jarrell of Toast, North
Carolina. He taught a repertory of oldtime fiddle tunes to his band,
the Hollow Rock String Band, which was an important link in the
instrumental music revival in the 1960s.
After receiving his Ph.D. in 1968, he taught English, folklore, and
ethnomusicology at UCLA in 1968-69. He then moved to Washington,
D.C., for over thirty years of service with Federal cultural
agencies. He was head of the Archive of Folk Song at the Library of
Congress 1969-74, director of the folk arts program at the National
Endowment for the Arts 1974-76, and director of the American Folklife
Center at the Library of Congress 1976-99. Since his retirement, he
has turned enthusiastically to a life of writing, consulting,
lecturing, and playing the fiddle.
John Kirk and Trish Miller: http://www.johnandtrish.com
Singer/songwriter John Kirk is skilled on a variety of instruments,
including fiddle, guitar, mandolin and banjo. A member of several
groups throughout the years including Walt Michael & Co., the
Susquehanna Stringband, and Vanaver Caravan, John brings a strong
voice and championship fiddling. His wife, Trish has been performing
as a clog dancer since 1981, including her work with Back Creek
Cloggers, the Green Grass Cloggers, and Vanaver Caravan. She plays
mountain-style clawhammer banjo and rhythm guitar learned from folks
in her native region ofVirginia, and is a dance caller, teacher, and
