Prior to founding Customer Lobby, Ted was an entraprenuer, venture capitalist and investment banker.<\/p>\n<p>He has been a guest blogger here before writing the popular <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/05\/responding-to-negative-reviews-%e2%80%93-your-prospects-are-the-real-audience\/\">Responding to Negative Reviews \u2013 Your Prospects are the Real Audience<\/a>.\u00a0Ted probably knows more about the ecosystem of the local review space than anyone that I know, for good or bad his life depends on it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*******<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few articles that marked notable events and\/or influenced my thinking in 2010 with respect to reviews and Google Maps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I found <a href=\"http:\/\/thenoisychannel.com\/2010\/05\/02\/thoughts-about-online-reputation\/\">this article<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nodalbits.com\/bits\/making-businesses-of-negativity\/\">this article<\/a> to be thoughtful commentaries on review policy.<\/li>\n<li>Although the implementation has a long way to go, <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/01\/google-places-search-to-iyps-go-microformats-young-man\/\">Google&#8217;s support of microformats<\/a> changed my view of how we and others will provide data to all of the search engines.<\/li>\n<li>The many versions of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.localseoguide.com\/meet-the-new-google-local-serps\/\">Google&#8217;s integration of local\/SERP results<\/a> had me rereading and recommending these articles (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidmihm.com\/local-search-ranking-factors.shtml\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.localseoguide.com\/how-to-do-local-seo-in-five-minutes-or-so\/\">here<\/a>) on local SEO.<\/li>\n<li>When we started building our company, I knew (and was repeatedly told) that creating a direct, outbound sales force was expensive and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mpdailyfix.com\/the-myth-of-an-overnight-success\/\">time consuming<\/a>. In reading <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748703814804576036252770969080.html\">this article<\/a>, it struck me that almost every company with scale that markets online services to small businesses, including Google, finds it worth the cost.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/30\/review-services-do-positive-only-reviews-have-a-place\/\">rise<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/10\/google-places-selective-reviews-now-being-removed\/\">fall<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/23\/the-review-economy-what-is-a-positive-review-worth-3-22\/\">reincarnation<\/a> of sock puppet accounts marked the early days of reviews spam. <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/12\/google-maps-rich-snippets-for-local-faq-testimonials-to-be-treated-as-reviews\/\"> Testimonials treated as reviews<\/a> are likely to be spammy as local businesses figure out that they can inflate their reviews count. I think Sam Decker got the title of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clickz.com\/clickz\/column\/1931486\/future-relevance\">this post<\/a> right but there is a lot more to come on this topic.<\/li>\n<li>Data from &#8220;people like me&#8221; gleaned through the integration of my and others <a href=\"http:\/\/www.screenwerk.com\/2010\/11\/16\/google-places-hotspot-now-putting-more-pressure-on-yelp\/\">opinions, and mobile and search data<\/a> could create the first real recommendation engine for local businesses.
