I have found a third reason: the <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/27\/google-maps-new-guidelines-for-dealing-with-multiple-listings\/\">duplicate removal procedure<\/a> in Google Places.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Screen-shot-2010-11-07-at-9.27.57-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Screen-shot-2010-11-07-at-9.27.57-PM.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"Screen shot 2010-11-07 at 9.27.57 PM\" width=\"330\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7884\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Screen-shot-2010-11-07-at-9.27.57-PM.png 586w, https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Screen-shot-2010-11-07-at-9.27.57-PM-281x200.png 281w, https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Screen-shot-2010-11-07-at-9.27.57-PM-520x369.png 520w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" \/><\/a> In the U.S., the current <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/27\/google-maps-new-guidelines-for-dealing-with-multiple-listings\/\">duplicate removal procedure<\/a> is to use the &#8220;Report a Problem&#8221; link at the bottom of the Places page of the duplicate. It would be wonderful if it worked but the process now is to  &#8220;Report a Problem&#8221;, pray aggressively, wait 8 weeks and then try again. It is an endless cycle of frustration that as often as not does not result in the removal of the dupe. <\/p>\n<p>It appears though, that in Canada, where the &#8220;Report a Problem&#8221; link doesn&#8217;t exist, Google <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/support\/forum\/p\/Places\/thread?tid=1297651b481458b7&#038;hl=en\">suggests<\/a> that &#8220;since Report a Problem is not live in Canada, the user should go ahead and claim the listing to remove it&#8221;. Once again they can use of the &#8220;claim the dupe, strip any enhanced content, wait for the merge, delete the listing from Places&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2009\/05\/08\/google-maps-how-to-remove-duplicate-records-in-the-local-business-center\/\">procedure<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>This is a process that actually works. It is a process that many in the US have reverted to using because the &#8220;Report a Problem&#8221; link doesn&#8217;t work. <\/p>\n<p>Maybe we should once again start a campaign to make Canada the 51st state.
