{"id":4458,"date":"2009-09-24T14:43:49","date_gmt":"2009-09-24T18:43:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/?p=4458"},"modified":"2009-09-25T03:44:38","modified_gmt":"2009-09-25T07:44:38","slug":"google-maps-ui-upgrade-places-page-replaces-tabbed-interface","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2009\/09\/24\/google-maps-ui-upgrade-places-page-replaces-tabbed-interface\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Maps UI upgrade: Places page replaces Tabbed Interface"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google Maps is <a href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/09\/place-pages-for-google-maps-there-are.html\">rolling out<\/a> a <a href=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2009\/09\/one-place-one-page.html\">new UI upgrade<\/a>, the \u201cPlaces\u201d page, worldwide to replace the tabbed interface text view in Maps. The rollout, beginning today, will take place over the next week.<\/p>\n<p>The new interface provides a single page where all information about a \u201cPlace\u201d is visible in well, one place. Google has taken all of the information that previously \u00a0resided under the tabs plus a range of new information and is presenting it in a single page view. Note for example this Places page for the <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/place?cid=1865653274540244561&#038;q=Verrazano%2BBridge%2BNY%2BNY\">Verrazano Narrows Bridge<\/a> contains a SketchUp3D image (lower right).<\/p>\n<p>The upgrade, according to Ron Lior, Maps product manager, not only presents more information about a particular business or place but offers improved internal ranking so that the most relevant information about a Place is displayed.<\/p>\n<p>Not limited to just businesses Google\u2019s vision is somewhat grander. They want to create a Places page for every place in the world (click to see examples), every <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/places\/us\/new-york\/grand-st\/367\/-kossar's-bialys-llc\">business<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/place?cid=2630157254466711414&amp;q=Grants%2BTomb%2BNY%2BNY\"> historic<\/a> site, <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/places\/us\/new-york-city\">city<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/place?ftid=0x89c2ccad3b3f6cb9:0x2a15827238b3dd60&amp;q=The%2Bhudson%2BRiver%2BNY%2BNY\">geographic feature<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/places\/us\/upper-west-side\">neighborhood<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/place?ftid=0x89c2588887756545:0xd6483c96eb192064\">transit<\/a> point. In the near future real estate listings will also be shown this way. (Note as these roll out, the URL&#8217;s may or may not work reliably.)
