I sent him over to the Wikipedia article on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps\">Google Maps<\/a> as a possible resource. I subsequently went there myself and realized that it had not been updated in \u00a0since the end of 2007 and that many details that I considered important were missing.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed that to understand Maps, the competitive landscape and the future direction of local, it was necessary to have a strong record of the developments in Maps for the past few years.  I decided to take the time to update the article at Wiki with those <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#Development_history\">additional Maps developments<\/a> from 2006, 2007 &amp; 2008 that I was aware of. Here is that list. If I am missing any please let me know: \u00a0<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<h3>2005<\/h3>\n<li>In April 2005, an alternate view was activated to show\u00a0<a class=\"new\" title=\"*Satellite images (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=*Satellite_images&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Satellite images<\/a>\u00a0of the area displayed.<\/li>\n<li>In April 2005, Google created\u00a0<a class=\"new\" title=\"*Google Ride Finder (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=*Google_Ride_Finder&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Google Ride Finder<\/a>\u00a0using Google Maps.<\/li>\n<li>In June 2005, Google released the\u00a0<a class=\"new\" title=\"*Google Maps API (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=*Google_Maps_API&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Extensibility and customisation<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In July 2005, Google began Google Maps and Google Local services for Japan, including road maps.<\/li>\n<li>On July 22, 2005, Google released &#8220;Hybrid View&#8221;. Together with this change, the satellite image data was converted from\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Plate carr\u00e9e projection\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plate_carr%C3%A9e_projection\">plate carr\u00e9e<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a title=\"Mercator projection\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercator_projection\">Mercator projection<\/a>, which makes for a less distorted image in the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Temperate climes\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Temperate_climes\">temperate climes<\/a>latitudes.<\/li>\n<li>In July 2005, in honor of the thirty-sixth anniversary of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Apollo Moon landing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_Moon_landing\">Apollo Moon landing<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"new\" title=\"*Google Moon (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=*Google_Moon&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Google Moon<\/a>\u00a0was launched.<\/li>\n<li>In September 2005, in the aftermath of\u00a0<a title=\"Hurricane Katrina\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hurricane_Katrina\">Hurricane Katrina<\/a>, Google Maps quickly updated its satellite imagery of\u00a0<a title=\"New Orleans\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans\">New Orleans<\/a>\u00a0to allow users to view the extent of the flooding in various parts of that city. (Oddly, in March 2007, imagery showing hurricane damage was replaced with images from before the storm; this replacement was not made on\u00a0<a title=\"Google Earth\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Earth\">Google Earth<\/a>, which still uses post-Katrina imagery.<sup><span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-14\">[<\/a><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-14\">15<\/a><span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-14\">]<\/a><\/span><\/sup><\/li>\n<h3>2006<\/h3>\n<li>As of January 2, 2006, Google Maps features road maps for the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, and certain cities in the Republic of Ireland. Coverage of the area around\u00a0<a title=\"Turin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turin\">Turin<\/a>\u00a0was added in time for the\u00a0<a title=\"2006 Winter Olympics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2006_Winter_Olympics\">2006 Winter Olympics<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On January 23, 2006, Google Maps was updated to use the same satellite image database as\u00a0<a title=\"Google Earth\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Earth\">Google Earth<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On March 12, 2006,\u00a0<a class=\"new\" title=\"*Google Mars (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=*Google_Mars&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Google Mars<\/a><sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-15\"><span>[<\/span>16<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0was launched, which features a draggable map and satellite imagery of the planet Mars.<\/li>\n<li>In April 2006, Google Local was merged into the main Google Maps site.<\/li>\n<li>On April 3, 2006,\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/apis\/maps\/documentation\/upgrade.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/apis\/maps\/documentation\/upgrade.html\">version 2<\/a>\u00a0of the Maps API was released.<\/li>\n<li>On June 11, 2006,\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/googlemapsapi.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/geocoding-at-last.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/googlemapsapi.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/geocoding-at-last.html\">Google added geocoding capabilities<\/a>\u00a0to the API, satisfying what it called the most requested feature for this service.<\/li>\n<li>On June 14, 2006,\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/googlemapsapi.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/google-maps-for-enterprise.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/googlemapsapi.blogspot.com\/2006\/06\/google-maps-for-enterprise.html\">Google Maps for Enterprise<\/a>\u00a0was officially launched. As a commercial service, it features intranet and advertisement-free\u00a0implementations.<\/li>\n<li>In July of 2006 Google started including Google Maps business listings in the form of Local OneBoxes in the main Google search results.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-16\"><span>[<\/span>17<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On December 9th Google integrates the PlusBox in the main search results.\u00a0<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-17\"><span>[<\/span>18<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On December 19th Google added a feature that lets you add multiple destinations to your driving directions.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-18\"><span>[<\/span>19<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<h3>2007<\/h3>\n<li>Beginning in February 2007,\u00a0<a title=\"Building\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Building\">buildings<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Subway (rail)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Subway_(rail)\">subway<\/a>\u00a0stops are displayed in Google Maps &#8220;map view&#8221; for parts of\u00a0<a title=\"New York City\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\">New York City<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Washington, D.C.\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington,_D.C.\">Washington, D.C.<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"London\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London\">London<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"San Francisco\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco\">San Francisco<\/a>, and some other cities.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-19\"><span>[<\/span>20<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On January 29, 2007\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/find-and-compare-local-businesses.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/01\/find-and-compare-local-businesses.html\">upgrades Local Universal results<\/a>\u00a0and includes more data in the main Google results page<\/li>\n<li>On February 28, 2007,\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/02\/stuck-in-traffic.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/02\/stuck-in-traffic.html\">Google Traffic info<\/a>\u00a0was officially launched to automatically include real-time\u00a0<a title=\"Traffic flow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Traffic_flow\">traffic flow<\/a>\u00a0conditions to the maps of 30 major cities of the United States.<\/li>\n<li>On March 8, 2007, the\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2007\/03\/08\/google-upgrades-local-business-center\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2007\/03\/08\/google-upgrades-local-business-center\/\">Local Business Center is upgraded<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On May 16, 2007 Google\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/local-businesses-in-universal-search.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/local-businesses-in-universal-search.html\">rolls out Universal search results<\/a>\u00a0including more Map information on the main Google results page.<\/li>\n<li>On May 18, 2007 Google adds\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/posted-by-david-tussey-product-manager.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/posted-by-david-tussey-product-manager.html\">neighborhood search capability<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On May 29, 2007,\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/googlemapsapi.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/driving-directions-support-added-to.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/googlemapsapi.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/driving-directions-support-added-to.html\">Google driving directions<\/a>\u00a0support was added to the Google Maps API.<\/li>\n<li>On May 29, 2007,\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2007\/05\/29\/google-maps-launches-street-view\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2007\/05\/29\/google-maps-launches-street-view\/\"><em>Street View<\/em>\u00a0was added<\/a>. It gives ground level 360 degree view of streets in some major cities in United States.<\/li>\n<li>On June 19th, 2007, allows\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/add-your-reviews-to-businesses-on.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/add-your-reviews-to-businesses-on.html\">reviews to be added directly to businesses<\/a>\u00a0on Google Maps<\/li>\n<li>On June 28, 2007,\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/its-click-drag-situation.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/its-click-drag-situation.html\">draggable driving directions<\/a>\u00a0were introduced.<\/li>\n<li>On July 31, 2007,\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/googlemapsapi.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/microformats-in-google-maps.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/googlemapsapi.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/microformats-in-google-maps.html\">support<\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a0<a title=\"HCard\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HCard\">hCard<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Microformat\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microformat\">microformat<\/a>\u00a0was announced; Google Maps search results will now output the\u00a0<a title=\"HCard\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HCard\">hCard<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Microformat\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microformat\">microformat<\/a>; unfortunately,\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/microformats.org\/discuss\/mail\/microformats-discuss\/2007-August\/010457.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/microformats.org\/discuss\/mail\/microformats-discuss\/2007-August\/010457.html\">the implementation is broken<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On August 21, 2007, Google announces a simple way\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/intl\/en\/press\/annc\/embed_maps.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/intl\/en\/press\/annc\/embed_maps.html\">to embed Google Maps<\/a>\u00a0onto other websites<\/li>\n<li>On September 13, 2007\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2007\/09\/more-of-world-for-you-to-explore.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2007\/09\/more-of-world-for-you-to-explore.html\">54 new countries are added to Google Maps<\/a>\u00a0in Latin America and Asia.<\/li>\n<li>On October 27, 2007,\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/community-maps-in-your-search-results_1522.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/community-maps-in-your-search-results_1522.html\">Google Maps starts mapping the geoweb<\/a>\u00a0and showing the results in Google Maps.<\/li>\n<li>On October 27, 2007 Google Maps\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2007\/10\/27\/google-coupons-now-has-searchable-interface\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2007\/10\/27\/google-coupons-now-has-searchable-interface\/\">adds a searchable interface for coupons<\/a>\u00a0in the business listings.<\/li>\n<li>On November 27, 2007, &#8220;Terrain&#8221; view showing basic\u00a0<a title=\"Topography\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Topography\">topographic<\/a>\u00a0features was added. The button for &#8220;Hybrid&#8221; view was removed, and replaced with a &#8220;Show labels&#8221; checkbox under the &#8220;Satellite&#8221; button to switch between &#8220;Hybrid&#8221; and &#8220;Satellite&#8221; views.<\/li>\n<h3>2008<\/h3>\n<li>On January 22,2008 Google\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/22\/google-maps-new-local-onebox-10-pack-now-live\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/22\/google-maps-new-local-onebox-10-pack-now-live\/\">expands the Local Onebox<\/a>\u00a0from 3 business listings to 10.<\/li>\n<li>On February 20, 2008, Google Maps allows\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2008\/02\/20\/google-maps-offers-refine-by-user-rating-option\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2008\/02\/20\/google-maps-offers-refine-by-user-rating-option\/\">searches to be refined by User Rating &amp; neighborhoods<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On March 18, 2008, Google allows end users to\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2008\/03\/its-your-world-map-it.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2008\/03\/its-your-world-map-it.html\">edit business listings and add new places<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On March 19, 2008, Google adds\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2008\/03\/19\/google-local-business-center-upgrade-unlimited-category-options\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2008\/03\/19\/google-local-business-center-upgrade-unlimited-category-options\/\">unlimited category options<\/a>\u00a0in the Local Business Center.<\/li>\n<li>On April 2, 2008, Google\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2008\/04\/last-summer-somewhere-in-adirondacks.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/google-latlong.blogspot.com\/2008\/04\/last-summer-somewhere-in-adirondacks.html\">adds a contour lines to the Terrain view<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In April 2008, a button to view recent Saved Locations was added to the right of the search field (must be signed in).<\/li>\n<li>In May 2008, a &#8220;More&#8221; button was added alongside the &#8220;Map&#8221;, &#8220;Satellite&#8221;, and &#8220;Terrain&#8221; buttons, permitting access to geographically-related photos on\u00a0<a title=\"Panoramio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Panoramio\">Panoramio<\/a>\u00a0and articles on\u00a0<a title=\"Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia\">Wikipedia<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>On May 15, 2008, ported to Flash and ActionScript 3 as a foundation for richer internet applications.<\/li>\n<li>On July 15, 2008, walking directions were added.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-doyouknow-20\"><span>[<\/span>21<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On August 6, 2008, Street View launched in Japan and Australia.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-doyouknow-20\"><span>[<\/span>21<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On August 15, 2008, the user interface was redesigned.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-doyouknow-20\"><span>[<\/span>21<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On August 29, 2008, Google signed a deal under which\u00a0<a title=\"GeoEye\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GeoEye\">GeoEye<\/a>\u00a0will supply the search giant with imagery from a satellite,<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-21\"><span>[<\/span>22<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and introduced the Map Maker tool for creation of map data.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-doyouknow-20\"><span>[<\/span>21<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On September 9, 2008, a reverse business lookup feature was added.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-doyouknow-20\"><span>[<\/span>21<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On September 23, 2008, information for the New York City\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Metropolitan Transit Authority\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metropolitan_Transit_Authority\">Metropolitan Transit Authority<\/a>\u00a0was added.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-doyouknow-20\"><span>[<\/span>21<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On October 7, 2008, GeoEye-1 took its first image, a bird&#8217;s-eye view of Kutztown University in Pennsylvania.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-22\"><span>[<\/span>23<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On October 26, 2008, reverse geocoding was added to the Maps API.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-doyouknow-20\"><span>[<\/span>21<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On November 11, 2008, Street View in Spain, Italy, and France was introduced.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-doyouknow-20\"><span>[<\/span>21<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On November 23, 2008, AIR support for the Maps API for Flash was added.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-doyouknow-20\"><span>[<\/span>21<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On November 25, 2008, a new user interface for Street View was introduced.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-doyouknow-20\"><span>[<\/span>21<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On November 27, 2008, maps, local business information, and local trends for China were introduced.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-doyouknow-20\"><span>[<\/span>21<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>On December 9, 2008, 2x Street View coverage was introduced.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Maps#cite_note-doyouknow-20\"><span>[<\/span>21<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A reader sent a query several weeks ago asking for a time line of developments for Google Maps.
