Sergey Brin noted in his <a href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/05\/2008-founders-letter.html\">annual Google Founder&#8217;s letter<\/a> that &#8220;after the launch of Google Map Maker in Pakistan, users mapped 25,000 kilometers of uncharted road in just two months&#8221;. That&#8217;s pretty cool stuff.\u00a0It has also been a product that seems to bring out the worst in people looking to gain a leg up with spamming and hijackings.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3229\" href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2009\/05\/11\/google-map-it-is-the-best-of-times-it-is-the-worst-of-timesswine-flu-and-maps\/swinefly-ny-ny\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3229\" title=\"swinefly-ny-ny\" src=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/swinefly-ny-ny.jpg\" alt=\"swinefly-ny-ny\" width=\"500\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/swinefly-ny-ny.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/swinefly-ny-ny-150x73.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/swinefly-ny-ny-450x221.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Swine Flu epidemic is a perfect case in point and it shows the contradictions in Maps in bold relief. Google Maps was used to <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?hl=en&amp;client=safari&amp;q=Swine+Flu+New+York+NY&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=109496610648025582911.0004686892fbefe515012&amp;cd=0&amp;ll=40.752816,-73.991568&amp;spn=12.892204,24.873047&amp;z=6\">track the spread of the epidemic <\/a>\u00a0around the world. The \u00a0major press and a bevy of blogs <a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/news?um=1&amp;ned=us&amp;hl=en&amp;q=%22Swine+Flu+Map%22\">widely covered<\/a> this \u00a0beneficial \u00a0use of Maps that helped inform and educate.<\/p>\n<p>But given that Maps is open and easily open to abuse, there are now searches like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?hl=en&amp;client=safari&amp;rls=en-us&amp;q=Swine+Flu+New+York+NY&amp;btnG=Search\">Swine Flu NY, NY<\/a> that return spam in Maps of the most exploitive sorts. SafetyGearandMore.com were not the only ones to utilize Maps for their commercial advantage as <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=Swine+Flu&amp;sll=39.707187,-78.75&amp;sspn=50.228781,99.492188&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=40.513799,-78.75&amp;spn=49.708495,99.492188&amp;z=4&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=109496610648025582911.0004686892fbefe515012\">several others across the US<\/a>\u00a0did as well.
