At the time Hitwise <a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.hitwise.com\/us-heather-hopkins\/2009\/02\/google_maps_edges_closer_to_ma_1.html\">showed<\/a> that Maps as nearly passing Mapquest but dropping back. As recently as last week Hitwise indicated that <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/10\/hitwise-mapquest-still-in-the-lead-but-google-maps-is-gaining\/\">Mapquest was still in the lead<\/a> but that gap was closing. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.hitwise.com\/us-heather-hopkins\/\">Heather Hopkins<\/a> of Hitwise took a fresh look at the numbers over this past weekend. Google has now surpassed Mapquest in monthly visitors. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/maps-vs-mapquest2.jpg\" alt=\"maps-vs-mapquest2\" title=\"maps-vs-mapquest2\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It is of interest that starting on March 14th, Google Maps shows almost a month of sustained gains while Mapquest shows an equivalent drop. It would be a reasonable to assume that the date coincides with the start of <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/31\/google-maps-now-showing-local-10-pack-on-broad-non-geo-phrase-searches\/\">Google&#8217;s expanded Local rollout<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Compete.com showed Google Maps overtaking Mapquest in visitors in January as did Comscore.
