{"id":30,"date":"2006-10-25T16:37:23","date_gmt":"2006-10-25T20:37:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/?p=30"},"modified":"2006-10-25T16:45:18","modified_gmt":"2006-10-25T20:45:18","slug":"google-organic-local-and-google-maps-local-data-diverge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2006\/10\/25\/google-organic-local-and-google-maps-local-data-diverge\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Organic Local and Google Maps Local data diverge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About a month and half a go I spotted a trend that is interesting: The top three local listings on the Google Organic results page and the top three listings in Google Map are often not the same.<\/p>\n<p>This has implications for both optimization strategies for Google Organic AND going forward for the <a title=\"Google Directory Assistance.\" href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/?p=21\">directory assistance service<\/a> that Google is testing. For the present, getting into the top three on the main results page or achieving a <a title=\"Getting a Google Onebox Listing\" href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/?p=23\">&#8220;onebox&#8221; result<\/a> on that page is all that matters. There is little traffic coming from  Google Maps and less yet from the yet unclaimed directory assistance.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that the two pages calculate authority of  listings using different algorithms.<!--more-->Here are some examples of this discrepancy:<\/p>\n<p>Search Phrase:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example 1: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Google Search Ellicottville NY Vacation Rentals\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=ellicottville+ny+vacation+rentals&#038;ie=utf-8&#038;oe=utf-8&#038;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&#038;client=firefox-a\">Ellicottville NY Vacation Rentals<\/a>  Google Organic results page: Onebox Standing<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Google Maps Search Ellicottville NY Vacation Rentals\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/maps?hl=en&#038;hs=2to&#038;lr=&#038;client=firefox-a&#038;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&#038;q=vacation+rentals&#038;near=Ellicottville,+NY+14731&#038;sa=X&#038;oi=local&#038;ct=more-results\">Ellicottville NY Vacation Rentals<\/a> Google Maps results page: Number 2 (B) Standing<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example 2: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Google Search Bardford Pa Restaurant\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Bradford+Pa+restaurant&#038;ie=utf-8&#038;oe=utf-8&#038;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&#038;client=firefox-a\">Bradford Pa restaurant<\/a> Google Organic results page: Number 1 (of 3) Standing<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Google Maps Search Bardford Pa Restaurant\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/maps?hl=en&#038;hs=Hf9&#038;lr=&#038;client=firefox-a&#038;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&#038;q=restaurant&#038;near=Bradford,+PA+16701&#038;sa=X&#038;oi=local&#038;ct=title\">Bradford Pa restaurant<\/a> Google Maps results page: Number 19 (I) Standing on <strong>Page 2!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most efforts at optimization for Google Maps (Local) have resulted in roughly similar standings. Out of 6 tested phrases (and that were listed in the top 3 on Google Organic),  there were 2 listings that had the same ranking in both locations. Three of the other listings were within one or two places but the example above had a discrepancy of 18 places.<\/p>\n<p>The optimization strategy used on the\u00c2\u00a0 <a title=\"Google Maps Search Bardford Pa Restaurant\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/maps?hl=en&#038;hs=Hf9&#038;lr=&#038;client=firefox-a&#038;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&#038;q=restaurant&#038;near=Bradford,+PA+16701&#038;sa=X&#038;oi=local&#038;ct=title\">Bradford Pa restaurant<\/a> was the same as used in every other listing that I have optimized.<br \/>\nThis one has me baffled.
