{"id":2792,"date":"2009-03-18T16:36:36","date_gmt":"2009-03-18T20:36:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/?p=2792"},"modified":"2009-03-19T21:31:28","modified_gmt":"2009-03-20T01:31:28","slug":"blackhats-to-google-maps-take-that","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/18\/blackhats-to-google-maps-take-that\/","title":{"rendered":"Blackhats to Google Maps: Take That!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I made fun of blackhats that had <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/11\/google-maps-hijacker-to-boss-oops-i-hijacked-the-wrong-business\/\">mapjacked a listing for a hotel<\/a> with the worst of reviews in an effort to rank high on locksmith related searches. \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/10-pack-reviews.jpg\">screenshot<\/a> from that incident shows that the blackhats had 7 of the 10 pack listing using a combination of illicit techniques on the phrase <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;q=manhattan+locksmith+new+york+ny&amp;fb=1&amp;split=1&amp;gl=us&amp;view=text&amp;latlng=11829589064012647855&amp;dtab=2&amp;ei=ZEfBSdi1O4qmsQPj6sAv&amp;resnum=1&amp;sa=N&amp;hl=en&amp;tab=lw\">Manhattan Locksmith New York, NY<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The listings have been changing quite a bit of late and it appears that Google is trying to clean things up. Today though, a poster in the Google Maps Help Forum <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/support\/forum\/p\/maps\/thread?fid=33676b261a05b16d0004656957edae28&amp;hl=en\">noted<\/a> that the blackhats seemed to have changed tactics and are no longer relying on cross industry hijackings. Never ones to be satisfied with half a dozen when they can have it all, the mapspammers now have 10 of the 10 Pack listings for the search phrase <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;q=manhattan+locksmith+new+york+ny&amp;fb=1&amp;split=1&amp;gl=us&amp;view=text&amp;latlng=11829589064012647855&amp;dtab=2&amp;ei=ZEfBSdi1O4qmsQPj6sAv&amp;resnum=1&amp;sa=N&amp;hl=en&amp;tab=lw\">Manhattan Locksmith New York, NY:<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2793\" title=\"take-that\" src=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/take-that.jpg\" alt=\"take-that\" width=\"500\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/take-that.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/take-that-150x72.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/take-that-450x218.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These folks are good! (For any Googler reading who might misinterpret my writing, that phrase means that they are competent at being crooks not that they are moral or decent&#8230;.just wanted to be clear). I really am cheering for Google but do they ever have their work cut out for them.
