It is currently a supplement to the 3 Pack for local keyword searches and it shows local results visually based on an image matching the search query.<\/p>\n<p>The new mobile focused search method does not yet appear on the desktop. It is not clear how permanent this new feature is but it is interesting in a number of respects.<\/p>\n<p>It appears well below the Local Pack and organic results on keyword searches and displays local listings with an image that matches the keyword query. If the user selects \u201cMore photos\u201d immediately below the image carousel or selects<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cView All\u201d when they scroll to the right the user is taken to a grid of images where the user can either view the locations in the Local finder list view or again click into the image to see the business profile.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-22156\" src=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/engagement-rings-williamsville-ny-Google-Search-417x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"417\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/engagement-rings-williamsville-ny-Google-Search-417x600.jpg 417w, https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/engagement-rings-williamsville-ny-Google-Search-139x200.jpg 139w, https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/engagement-rings-williamsville-ny-Google-Search-712x1024.jpg 712w, https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/engagement-rings-williamsville-ny-Google-Search.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some observations:<\/p>\n<p>1- This is a highly visual search metaphor and is very engaging.<\/p>\n<p>2- It obviously relies on Google\u2019s ability to understand the content of an image that has been uploaded to the business\u2019s listing. We have seen similar examples of Google\u2019s image understanding recently \u00a0where we saw Google <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2019\/08\/07\/google-local-shows-photos-to-match-the-user-query-and-what-it-means-to-you\/\">swapping out images in the local pack based on the user query<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3- Google is clearly using sophisticated image recognition in<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>this endeavor and is quite successful at it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For now this new search metaphor is buried down the page, several scrolls below the ads, the pack and the organic results. But if users accept this new way of interacting with local businesses it could at some point replace the Local Pack for discovery.<\/p>\n<p>Minmally it should be seen as one more way that Google understands a business entity, what they do and what they sell.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once again Google is ringing the image bell and local merchants need to pay attention.
