Meant to improve mobile user experience when accessing a site the penalty targets sites that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Show a popup that covers the main content, either immediately after the user navigates to a page from the search results, or while they are looking through the page.<\/li>\n<li>Displays a standalone interstitial that the user has to dismiss before accessing the main content.<\/li>\n<li>Uses a layout where the above-the-fold portion of the page appears similar to a standalone interstitial, but the original content has been inlined underneath the fold.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yelp was particularly guilty of the above the fold interstitial behaviors. In fact this is what led to my <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2016\/08\/25\/yelps-stoppleman-on-interstitials-my-yelp-account\/\">twitter tete-a-tete with Mr. Stoppleman<\/a>. He suggested that I delete my account when\u00a0I noted how consumer unfriendly Yelp&#8217;s attempt to drive app usage was.<\/p>\n<p>Today I see that the Yelp mobile experience has dramatically improved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2496.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20103\" src=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2496.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"1334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2496.png 750w, https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2496-112x200.png 112w, https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2496-337x600.png 337w, https:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2496-576x1024.png 576w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>* Big surprise that, despite Yelp&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/blumenthals.com\/blog\/2016\/08\/25\/yelps-stoppleman-on-interstitials-my-yelp-account\/\">complaining<\/a> about the Google interstitial penalty as anti-competetive, under pressure of their own penalty, finally fixed their mobile experience. Sort of.
