About TuneScape
T
he members of Tunescape share a common vision, and are finding ways to
c
reate texture and feeling in a unique blend of instruments and
percussion.
W
hen they first played together they could immediately hear this sound
b
ecoming a reality, and it was magical. The discovery of a common musical
g
oal was an exciting revelation, and TuneScape was born. TuneScape
c
urrently has an ensemble of four musicians that work together to add
h
armony and danceable rhythm to tunes both new and traditional.
T
uneScape was formed in 2005 by Jodi Blumenthal (piano, fiddle), and John
S
iepierski (fiddle). Within a few months, Rachel Bell (flute, accordion)
b
egan playing with the group to make a delightful and energetic blend
of dance
m
usic. Tom Santarsiero (mandolin, banjo, guitar, and foot percussion)
o
ccasionally joins to add and extra zing to the arrangements.
J
odi and Tom were already established players in the traditional New
England
c
ontra dance scene when the band was created. John came on the scene in
2
003 at the age of 13, with a fiddling style that soon developed to
rival that
o
f seasoned contra dance veterans. Rachel had been in college studying
music
f
or several years before she began playing dances with TuneScape in June
2
005. Her crisp attack of the fingerboard and beautiful chordal
accents on
a
ccordion are a perfect blend with John's fiddle. Rachel also plays
flute and
p
ennywhistle, which gives a fantastic and beautiful variety of sound to
T
uneScape.

From its inception, TuneScape has been exploring music outside the
bounds of
N
ew England contra dance. Tunes of Quebec, Appalachia, Ireland, and
e
lsewhere are woven into their repertoire, and they attempt to stretch
the
f
ormat of traditional dance music. Still, their interest in other genres
g
enerates an obsession with rhythmic integrity and the sustaining
pulse that
i
s the essence of dance music. The listener could never miss the
underlying
d
rive of much of TuneScape’s music.
