Google Maps: Important announcement for Local Business Center users

Category: Google Places (Maps & Local) – Mike Blumenthal – 9:02 pm

Update 12:50 5/18

Temporarily Unavailable
  The Google Local Business Center is unavailable for the next hour
We appreciate your patience as we perform some routine system maintenance.

More specifically, we’re updating ‘the backend’ (to employ that catchy, catchall moniker coined and lent to us by engineering folks who work on all of the technical fiddly bits behind the scenes but know we communications folks can’t very well say ‘We’re updating all of the technical fiddly bits behind the scenes’ and expect you, an enlightened Google user, to take us seriously or at least not wonder aloud ‘ Wait, what sort of bits were those again?’).

So please check back in sixty minutes. Maybe less, considering the time you’ve invested in deciphering this message.

This was published in the Google Maps Help Forum at 7:30 on 5/15:

We’re planning scheduled downtime for the Local Business Center on Monday, May 18, at around 12:30pm EDT for approximately two hours. During this time, you will not be able to access your Local Business Center account.

Thanks for your patience,

I do not remember too many times when the LBC has been formally shut down even for 2 hours. Is it the fix to the merging issues? Something else? Check back.

Please consider leaving a comment as your input will help me (& everyone else) better understand and learn about local.

  1. Hey maybe they will fix a recent problem I have noticed….buying links to rank in Maps!!

    I am seeing people paying….yes…paying to rank in Maps. It is no different that buying links. Think about it. Pay yellowpages dot com 200 a month and voila there you are in the ten packs.

    What makes you think so?

    @BobTheBuilder
    Well I think everyone wishes the same but I wonder why they would need to take down the LBC to do that?

    @Roman

  7. @Blumenthals:

    Due to the fact that the only listings ranking well, seem to all have Yellow listings. And other businesses that dont are all now on like page 300 after the last update.

    Could you send along the Google query where you are seeing that?

  9. I’d definitely be interested in seeing hard evidence that paid listings in Yellow Pages sites carry more validity to the Google Maps algorithm than the free listings (or that either carries any validity at all.)

  13. @all. Yes I will. Give till later tomorrow. Out of office till then.

    Another issue I am having, is despite number one listings for many keywords in Local, the ten packs are not showing them. Do you think it could be left over blocking code from when my listing was banned?

    Perhaps the algo is blocking me from ten pack display for my most necessary keywords such as “Los Angeles Injury Lawyers”

  15. Almost all of these top ten listings are yellow pages dot com. I got mine by the old fashioned way of manual submissions to everything in the world I could find.

    I think my data mashup is better. But here you go.
