I understand that this post and it's subsequent comments are over a year old, but I think it would be great if you could do a follow-up considering all the changes that have been made regarding social/local search.

It's hard to imagine that businesses would put such little thought into their name in the first place. But, making it more friendly to Google forces them to consider their branding a bit more, which isn't all bad.

Rather than restrict a company for having for instant sister companies at the same location, Google should allow for such entities to have a listing of their own. It's like saying LG Electronics be treated the same as their LG CE divison, or worst GE which has a web of divisions!

The easy solution is for Google to simply change the data template to "business type", rather than business name.

My personal feeling is that asking a business to change its name or lose a shot at ranking is lame. The real solution is to ignore the business name and instead focus on the free form categories and then the authority of the actual site.

Google should not ignore the authority of the underlying sites. My two cents.

Hi Mary

Thanks for your input. I agree with you and did link to your article above.

I am suggesting that in many cases a tagline is not the only thing that needs adding. Many small businesses need to review their base name and be sure that it is appropriate as well. I often find that for whatever reason (some mentioned above) that it needs tweaking as well.

Hi Mike,
While renaming their business may not be practical for many people, I've found that creating and using a tagline can help with both Local SEO and in making what you do and where you do it immediately obvious to humans.

Sometimes, if your tagline is short enough, you can tack it on to your business name in Maps. When this doesn't fly, you can still use it as the first line in your description and/or you can create an attribute for it and display it there. Since attributes appear in alphabetical order above the description in your listing you can manipulate it to be the first thing visitors see in your Overview and the second thing they see, after your hours, in the Details area.

There's are article on my blog that talks more about taglines: http://www.marybowling.com/local-search-optimization/taglines-why-you-need-one-2/

Thanks! Mary

For Google Maps, I personally think the title should have zero significance, as it encourages businesses to use 301 redirects and make up false names. What is good about using a bogus name that encourages mapspam?

As for Yahoo! I think it doesn't matter, as there is no real threat of a <em>one box</em> stealing other people's business as there is in Google. My two cents.
