I appreciate your affinity for local businesses. Having spent much of my adult life working in, owning and promoting small retail I can understand your dismay at their demise. That being said, at least in the US, the march is ever onward and unless and until the underlying rules of capitalism are changed it will be the odd small shop that survives and thrives...much I fear like small businesses in the local space.
